Hello! I’m Millie, and I have arthritis.
It’s a sentence I’ve been saying since 2003, when I was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) at the age of four. I know I’m not the typical poster girl for arthritis, usually it conjures up images of OAPS, not toddlers. In reality, it affects 1 in 1000 children in the UK, which was a surprise to me, given I’ve always liked to think I was one in a million.
Over the last 23 years, I've had a front-row seat to both the realities of living with JIA and the extraordinary progress that's been made in treating it. When I was diagnosed, some of the treatments that have had the greatest impact on my quality of life either didn't exist or weren't widely available at the time. That's a remarkable thing to be able to say within such a (relatively) short period of time.
It's also a reminder that progress isn't inevitable. It happens because people devote their careers to research, because charities fund that work, and because people decide it's worth backing. I'm fundraising in the hope that, twenty years from now, someone diagnosed with JIA will be able to say the same thing about today's treatments.
